Single parents, disabled people and people in insecure work are heavily overrepresented.
The benefits system is meant to be the safety net, but it leaves gaps that churches, mosques, gurdwaras and community groups have stepped in to cover. A food bank in a church hall is often the first place where someone in crisis talks to a person rather than a phone line, so volunteers can spot debt, housing and benefit problems early and refer people to advice. That early contact can stop a short crisis from turning into eviction or long-term debt.

How they work: Trussell food banks work on a referral model: frontline professionals such as doctors, schools, housing officers and Citizens Advice issue a voucher, which also links people to support beyond food. Each food bank is run locally, often from a church or community building, and collects donations from the public and supermarkets. Trussell supports them with training and data and campaigns nationally for a social security system that ends the need for food banks.
