Why this matters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Many families in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri have fled not once but several times as armed groups advance and retreat. Each move happens in chaos: people run from fighting at night, children are separated from parents at markets or schools, and older relatives may stay behind. Unaccompanied children end up in displacement sites, with host families, or in towns far from home, and parents may spend months not knowing whether they are alive.

Formal systems cannot keep up. Civil registration is weak, many people have no identity documents, phone coverage is patchy in rural areas, and control of some areas has changed hands since 2025. Without a neutral body to record who is looking for whom and carry information across frontlines, separated relatives have little chance of finding each other. Prompt registration and careful tracing shorten the time children spend alone and reduce their exposure to recruitment by armed groups, exploitation and abuse.

What your gift pays for

  • Registration of unaccompanied and separated children at arrival points and displacement sites
  • Tracing visits, message exchanges and phone calls that connect separated relatives
  • Transport and escort for children being reunited with their families
  • Follow-up visits after reunification to check that children are safe and settled

Organization

International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) - DRC delegation · Democratic Republic of the Congo

parent: ICRC, Swiss UID / Geneva commercial register (association) · No. CHE-105.924.024

Founded 1978 · Headquarters: Kinshasa

Runs Restoring Family Links tracing and reunification for conflict-separated families in eastern DRC.

How they work: The ICRC carries out its Restoring Family Links work with volunteers of the national Red Cross Society, who register people searching for relatives, collect and deliver Red Cross messages, and offer phone calls. Because the ICRC acts as a neutral intermediary with access on different sides of a conflict, it can trace people across frontlines and arrange reunifications other organizations cannot. Before a child is reunited, staff verify identities and confirm that the family wishes and is able to take the child back.

Track record: With the DRC Red Cross, the ICRC reunited 83 children aged 5 to 19 in Kalemie with families they had been separated from by armed conflict, some for over three years.

Giving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Repeated displacement in the eastern provinces is the setting for the Congolese causes. The International Committee of the Red Cross registers displaced people and traces families separated by shifting frontlines, while the Norwegian Refugee Council helps those able to return as some areas stabilize. A third cause, with the Congolese group ACIDH, provides legal support to communities disputing land claims tied to mining concessions, linking the country's mineral wealth to questions of land and rights.

3 causes are listed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, each with its own verified organization. $275,038 has been distributed to causes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2021.
