Keeps mobile surgical units running in areas where the formal health system has collapsed under the ongoing civil war — funding covers fuel, medical consumables, and staff stipends.
Why this matters in Sudan
Since fighting broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, hospitals have been shelled, looted and occupied, and a large share of health facilities in conflict-affected states have stopped working or function only partly. Doctors and nurses have been displaced along with everyone else, and supply routes for medicines and fuel are regularly cut.
Those left without care include people wounded by gunfire, shelling and other violence, as well as women with complicated deliveries and patients needing emergency surgery for everyday reasons such as appendicitis or a road accident. Many have fled to towns and camps where no surgical capacity existed before the war. A field surgical team can keep operating only while its generators run, its theater stays stocked and its staff are paid, which is why running costs, more than buildings, are the main need. Local doctors and nurses, many displaced themselves, work alongside international staff to keep these units open.
What your gift pays for
- Fuel for generators that power operating theaters, sterilization equipment and lighting
- Surgical consumables such as sutures, dressings, anesthetics and blood-transfusion supplies
- Stipends for national doctors, nurses and support staff who keep field units open
- Medicines and wound-care supplies for patients recovering after trauma surgery
Organization
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Sudan · Sudan
Swiss federal identification number (parent: Médecins Sans Frontières International, Geneva) · No. CH-660.1.555.004-1
Founded 1979
Provides emergency and surgical care in war-affected Sudan, including surgery at Tawila hospital in North Darfur.
How they work: MSF is an independent medical humanitarian organization funded overwhelmingly by private donations, and it avoids funding tied to political conditions, which supports its negotiations for access with all parties to a conflict. In the current war its teams run or support emergency rooms, surgical wards and maternity services, and set up mobile clinics where people have fled. Care is free of charge, and MSF also documents and speaks publicly about attacks on patients and health facilities.
Track record: In 2025 MSF teams in Sudan treated 10,800 people for intentional physical violence, providing trauma surgery at hospitals including Bashair in Khartoum and Nyala in South Darfur.

Giving in Sudan
The causes listed for Sudan respond to a civil war that has collapsed much of the formal health system and cut supply routes into besieged areas where famine has been confirmed. Medecins Sans Frontieres keeps mobile surgical units running, the World Food Programme delivers emergency food into cut-off areas, and the Norwegian Refugee Council provides shelter and essential items for newly displaced households. UNICEF distributes insecticide-treated bed nets against malaria, which remains a heavy burden alongside the conflict.
4 causes are listed in Sudan, each with its own verified organization. $305,008 has been distributed to causes in Sudan since 2021.
