Funds community check-in visits for elderly residents in areas affected by ongoing internal conflict.
Why this matters in Myanmar
When fighting reaches a village, older residents are among the least able to flee and among the most likely to be left behind when families scatter. Conflict since the 2021 military takeover in Myanmar has displaced millions of people, and in many areas health facilities, pharmacies and markets have closed or become unsafe to reach. Older people with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes lose access to medicine, and those with limited mobility can be confined to a single room for months.
The state pension covers mainly former civil servants, so most older people depend on their children, and migration and conflict have taken many of those children away. The March 2025 earthquake centered near Sagaing and Mandalay added damage in areas already affected by fighting. Regular check-ins by trusted people from the same community are often the only way to learn who needs medicine, food or help.

Founded 2003 · Headquarters: Yangon
HelpAge International works in Myanmar supporting older people, including humanitarian response after the 2025 earthquake.
How they work: HelpAge's work in the country has long been built around older people's self-help groups, community-based associations that run savings and loans, health activities and mutual support. Volunteers from these groups and their wider communities provide care to housebound people. Working through local structures rather than outside teams allows support to continue where access is restricted, and HelpAge also presses humanitarian agencies to count older people in their assessments and plans.
Track record: Since the 2021 coup HelpAge's homecare volunteers in Myanmar have visited older people at home, and it gave grants to 5,000 older people and people with disabilities.

Giving in Myanmar
Since the 2021 military coup, conflict inside Myanmar has displaced civilians and led to detentions for peaceful political activity. The three causes listed respond to those consequences: cross-border humanitarian aid through The Border Consortium, food, medicine and family support for detainees through the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, and check-in visits for elderly residents of conflict-affected areas through HelpAge International. Each works with people especially exposed to the crisis.
3 causes are listed in Myanmar, each with its own verified organization. $375,312 has been distributed to causes in Myanmar since 2021.
