Funds solar-powered borehole pumps in villages where women and girls currently walk several hours daily to collect water.
Why this matters in Mali
Water collection in rural Mali falls overwhelmingly to women and girls, and in the Sahelian regions the trip often means a long walk to a hand-dug well or a seasonal pond that dries out before the rains return. Hours spent hauling water are hours not spent in school, in the fields or at market, and the water itself is frequently unsafe. Hand pumps installed in past decades help, but many have broken down for lack of spare parts or a local mechanic.
Insecurity since 2012 has made things harder. Fighting and the spread of armed groups in the north and center have damaged water points, pushed displaced families into host villages that already had too little, and kept many state technicians away from rural areas. Solar pumping suits this setting: sunshine is strong for most of the year, and a pump that needs no diesel removes both a recurring cost and a fuel supply chain that conflict easily cuts.
What your gift pays for
- Solar panels, pumps and controllers sized to the yield of each borehole and the size of the village
- Elevated storage tanks and tap stands that shorten queues and bring water closer to homes
- Training and basic toolkits for village water committees and local mechanics who handle repairs
- Water quality testing when each borehole is commissioned and at intervals afterward

WaterAid Mali · Mali
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: WaterAid UK) · No. 288701
Founded 2001 · Headquarters: Bamako
WaterAid's Mali programme works on safe water, sanitation and hygiene for rural communities.
How they work: WaterAid's Mali program works mainly through Malian partner organizations and the communes, which hold legal responsibility for local water services under the country's decentralization laws. Projects typically pair new or rehabilitated water points with sanitation and hygiene promotion, and set up water user associations that collect small fees for maintenance. WaterAid also supports commune and national authorities with planning and monitoring, aiming for services that keep working after the project team has left.
Track record: WaterAid reached 43,000 people in Mali with safe water and 39,000 with sanitation in 2013, while restoring services damaged in the 2012-2013 conflict.

Giving in Mali
Rural distance is the problem each Malian cause tries to shorten. Girls in rural districts receive help with school costs and uniforms in a country where only about 35.6 percent of adults can read and write, and teachers receive stipends to accept postings in under-resourced areas. Health posts far from district hospitals get basic supplies through Muso, and solar-powered boreholes spare women and girls hours of daily walking to collect water. Plan International, Save the Children and WaterAid are among the partners.
4 causes are listed in Mali, each with its own verified organization. $414,466 has been distributed to causes in Mali since 2021.
