Why this matters in Guatemala

Public secondary schooling thins out quickly in Guatemala's rural highlands, where much of the upper-secondary provision is private or cooperative-run and charges fees. Young K'iche' and Mam speakers in departments such as Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán and San Marcos often finish primary school and go straight to work in farming, markets or family workshops.

Most of them enter the informal economy as unpaid family workers or self-employed traders, with low incomes and no social security. Migration north, to Mexico and the United States, is a common answer, at great personal risk. Practical training that is officially recognized and tied to what sells locally, such as cooking, baking or small-business skills, offers a way to earn closer to home. Courses held on weekends and near where young people live suit those who already work during the week, and a certificate gives employers and customers a reason to trust their skills.

What your gift pays for

  • Instructor fees for weekend courses in cooking, baking and other practical trades
  • Ingredients, tools and materials used in hands-on cooking and baking training sessions
  • Short courses in business basics and personal finance for young entrepreneurs
  • Certification costs for diplomas endorsed by the Ministry of Education

Organization

FUNDAP (Fundación para el Desarrollo Integral de Programas Socioeconómicos) · Guatemala

Founded 1982 · Headquarters: Quetzaltenango

Quetzaltenango-based Guatemalan foundation running education and training programmes for rural and Indigenous youth.

How they work: FUNDAP has delivered youth skills training through local partners in the western highlands, including church-run child development centers in Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán that provide space and equipment. In one documented program, students attended Saturday technical courses over ten months in cooking, baking and pastry or English, followed by a two-month entrepreneurship course covering business practice and basic finance. Learners who scored at least 80 percent received a certificate endorsed by Guatemala's Ministry of Education.

Track record: FUNDAP's education programme supports access to basic education and offers technical business training and career development aimed at decent employment.

Giving in Guatemala

Language and terrain set the agenda in rural Guatemala. Many children begin school speaking a Mayan language rather than Spanish, so one cause funds bilingual teaching materials, and another provides practical skills training for rural youth with limited access to secondary school. Mountain villages without piped water gain protected springs and gravity-fed systems through Agua del Pueblo, and working animals on small farms receive veterinary care. Partners are Guatemalan organizations with roots in the communities they serve.

4 causes are listed in Guatemala, each with its own verified organization. $281,970 has been distributed to causes in Guatemala since 2021.
