Funds resettlement support for families able to return home as parts of the eastern provinces stabilize.
Why this matters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Displacement in eastern Congo has followed the frontlines of the M23 conflict and dozens of other armed groups for years. After M23 seized Goma in January 2025, the large displacement sites around the city were dismantled and families were pushed to return to villages in North Kivu territories such as Masisi and Nyiragongo, often before conditions were safe or homes were habitable.
Returning families typically find houses burned or looted, fields overgrown, livestock gone, and schools and health centers damaged. Many have no tools or seed for the next season and must buy food until a harvest comes in. Land disputes are common when people come back after long absences, and cuts to humanitarian funding in 2025 reduced the help available. A modest amount of cash, shelter materials and practical support at the point of return can decide whether a family stays and rebuilds or is uprooted again.

Organization
Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) DR Congo · Democratic Republic of the Congo
Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Norwegian Refugee Council) · No. 977538319
Founded 2001
Provides cash for transport and return support to families going home in eastern DRC.
How they work: NRC delivers much of its return support as cash, letting families decide what they need most, and pairs it with shelter repairs, education programs, and information, counseling and legal assistance. That legal work helps returnees obtain identity documents and settle housing, land and property disputes, often through local mediation. NRC also raises with authorities and donors the conditions families face on return, including when returns are neither voluntary nor safe.
Track record: In 2025 NRC distributed nearly US$4.6 million in cash assistance to over 20,000 families resettling in Masisi territory after being forced to return from displacement sites.

Giving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Repeated displacement in the eastern provinces is the setting for the Congolese causes. The International Committee of the Red Cross registers displaced people and traces families separated by shifting frontlines, while the Norwegian Refugee Council helps those able to return as some areas stabilize. A third cause, with the Congolese group ACIDH, provides legal support to communities disputing land claims tied to mining concessions, linking the country's mineral wealth to questions of land and rights.
3 causes are listed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, each with its own verified organization. $275,038 has been distributed to causes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2021.
