Why this matters in South Sudan
Most children in South Sudan grow up in homes without books, and many schools have too few textbooks for one per class, let alone one per pupil. Decades of war before and after independence in 2011 interrupted the schooling of two generations, so many parents never learned to read and cannot help with homework. Early-grade teachers often have little formal training, and teaching switches to English, a language many children do not speak at home, early in primary school.
Reading improves with practice, and practice needs something to read. A reading room provides that outside crowded classrooms, with a tutor who can sit beside a struggling child. It also serves girls who have left school for early marriage or household work, and families returning from or fleeing Sudan since war broke out there in 2023, many of whose children have missed months or years of lessons.

Organization
Windle Trust International · South Sudan
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Windle Trust International UK) · No. 1092834
Founded 1977 · Headquarters: Juba
Education charity running education-in-emergencies and learning projects in South Sudan.
How they work: Windle Trust International began by funding education for refugees from the region and still centers its work on people whose schooling was cut short by conflict. In South Sudan it combines scholarships, teacher training and English-language courses, working with national and state education authorities and in refugee and returnee settings. Its approach puts particular weight on girls and women, both as learners and as teachers, on the view that more women at the front of classrooms helps keep girls in school.
Track record: In 2020 Windle set up 20 accelerated secondary education centres in South Sudan, enrolling 655 learners, and funds training scholarships for female teachers.

Giving in South Sudan
Years of conflict have left South Sudan with deep gaps in schooling, maternal care and child nutrition, and the three causes listed here address each in turn. Volunteer tutors and reading materials support learners in a country with a literacy rate of about 34.5 percent. Midwifery training prepares certified midwives for a country where maternal mortality is far above the global average, and therapeutic feeding reaches children under five at a time when roughly one in five is acutely malnourished. Partners include Windle Trust International and Concern Worldwide.
3 causes are listed in South Sudan, each with its own verified organization. $233,015 has been distributed to causes in South Sudan since 2021.
