Funds supplementary feeding programs for young children in drought-affected regions.
Why this matters in Ethiopia
Pastoralist families in the southern and eastern lowlands, in Somali region, Afar and the Borena area of Oromia, measure wealth in livestock and depend on milk for much of their children's diet. Between 2020 and 2023 the Horn of Africa endured five consecutive failed rainy seasons, and millions of animals died. When herds die, milk disappears from a child's diet almost overnight, and families selling animals to buy grain get less for them just as food prices rise. Children under five, and pregnant and breastfeeding women, are the first to become acutely malnourished.
Health extension workers and public health posts can screen children and treat the most severe cases, but they are stretched thin across remote pastoral areas and often run short of therapeutic and supplementary foods. Conflict in the north and recurring displacement have added to demand. Catching moderate malnutrition early, before it becomes severe and life-threatening, is far cheaper and safer than hospital treatment, and it requires regular screening and a steady supply of fortified food where families actually live.

Organization
Save the Children Ethiopia · Ethiopia
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Save the Children International) · No. 1076822
Founded 2012 · Headquarters: Addis Ababa
Runs nutrition and feeding responses for children in drought-affected regions.
How they work: Save the Children works through the government health system, supporting health posts, health centers and the health extension workers who staff them with training, supplies and supervision. Its nutrition work follows the community-based management of acute malnutrition model, in which children are screened in their communities and most are treated as outpatients. In pastoral areas where facilities are far apart, it runs mobile health and nutrition teams that travel to settlements.
Track record: During the 2015-16 drought, Save the Children supported acute malnutrition detection and treatment in 60 priority drought-affected districts of Ethiopia.

Giving in Ethiopia
Drought is the single driver behind all three Ethiopian causes. Consecutive failed rainy seasons have dried up traditional water sources, pushed families to migrate and left young children short of food, so the funds respond with borehole drilling and repair, temporary classrooms for displaced children, and supplementary feeding. Save the Children Ethiopia partners on the schooling and nutrition work, and WaterAid Ethiopia on water. Together they address the immediate effects of repeated drought on rural households.
3 causes are listed in Ethiopia, each with its own verified organization. $284,431 has been distributed to causes in Ethiopia since 2021.
