Why this matters in the Netherlands

Newcomers granted asylum are expected to reach a set level of Dutch under the civic integration system, which municipalities have run since 2022. The formal route works for many people but leaves gaps. Adults who cannot read or write in any language, including some arriving from Eritrea, Syria or Afghanistan after interrupted schooling, need basic literacy before grammar, and standard courses move too fast for them. Ukrainians under temporary protection are not required to follow civic integration at all, so their access to classes depends on what is offered locally.

Language is the gate to almost everything else: reading a letter from the municipality, speaking to a child's teacher, getting through a job interview, filling in a housing benefit form. Free, low-threshold classes in a neighborhood library cover the months before a newcomer is ready for formal courses, and they stay open to people who have finished the official route but still struggle with written Dutch.

What your gift pays for

  • Trainer fees for literacy groups for adults who never learned to read in their first language
  • Workbooks, easy-reading books in simple Dutch and practice materials learners can take home
  • Training sessions preparing volunteer language coaches to teach adults with little formal schooling
  • Laptops and connectivity for sessions where learners practice the online forms public services now require

Organization

Stichting Lezen & Schrijven · Netherlands

Kamer van Koophandel (KvK) / Belastingdienst RSIN · No. KvK 27263438; RSIN 8143.94.309

Founded 2004 · Headquarters: Den Haag

National foundation tackling low literacy, including Dutch-language learning for adults.

How they work: Stichting Lezen & Schrijven works mainly through Taalhuizen, language points usually based in public libraries and set up together with the municipality, adult education providers and welfare organizations. Learners get an intake and are matched to a course, a volunteer coach or a self-study route. The foundation trains volunteers, develops teaching materials and pushes municipalities to treat low literacy as a policy issue, while the Digitaalhuis variant adds help with the digital services that much of public life now runs through.

Track record: In 2018 its 110 (Digi)Taalhuizen and 1,010 partners brought 32,781 new participants into language and literacy courses, and 7,467 volunteers were trained.

Giving in the Netherlands

Water, nature and housing security run through the Dutch causes. With a large share of the country below sea level, restored coastal wetlands serve as flood defense as well as habitat, and unused city land becomes pollinator corridors for declining bee populations. Social causes include adult literacy and Dutch-language classes for newcomers, companionship and practical support that help seniors keep living at home, and rent-arrears mediation by Leger des Heils that heads off evictions. Partners also include Natuurmonumenten and Nationaal Ouderenfonds.

5 causes are listed in the Netherlands, each with its own verified organization. $356,435 has been distributed to causes in the Netherlands since 2021.
