Funds a volunteer visitation program for elderly residents in villages with the country's fastest-declining rural populations.
Why this matters in Bulgaria
Bulgaria has lost a large share of its population since 1989 through emigration and low birth rates, and the decline has been steepest in villages of the northwest and the border regions. National Statistical Institute data showed more than 170 villages with no permanent residents and several hundred more with fewer than ten by the end of 2019, and the number of empty villages has grown since. In many others, the remaining residents are almost all pensioners.
Services have withdrawn with the people. Village doctors' practices close, bus routes are cut, and the nearest pharmacy or municipal office may be a town an hour away. Municipal home-care services exist but are stretched, and many villages are too small to receive a regular visit. An older person living alone can go days without speaking to anyone. Volunteer visits provide steady contact, help with errands and a link to services when health or living conditions deteriorate.
What your gift pays for
- Recruitment, training and coordination of local volunteers who visit isolated older people
- Fuel and transport so volunteers can reach villages without regular buses
- Food parcels and hygiene items for residents living on very small pensions
- Basic checks such as blood pressure measurement during home visits
Organization
Bulgarian Red Cross · Bulgaria
Bulgarian Registry Agency (EIK/BULSTAT) · No. 000703415
Founded 1878 · Headquarters: Sofia
National Red Cross society running home care and volunteer support services for elderly people.
How they work: The Bulgarian Red Cross works through regional branches across the country and a large volunteer base that includes a youth wing. Its Home Care centres employ trained caregivers who help older people with personal care, basic health monitoring and household tasks, while volunteers add regular visits and deliveries. The society also distributes food aid to low-income households and takes part in national emergency response, which gives it a presence in small communities beyond the main towns.
Track record: The Bulgarian Red Cross has run Home Care centres for the elderly since 2003, expanding from Sofia to Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad, Montana, Smolyan, Dobrich and Vratsa district.

Giving in Bulgaria
Rural decline is the background to two of the Bulgarian causes. Villages with some of Europe's fastest-shrinking populations are left with older residents who need company and care, and the Bulgarian Red Cross and Caritas Bulgaria respond with volunteer visits and shared caregiving support. The third cause, with the Balkan Heritage Foundation, restores smaller archaeological and cultural sites that fall outside major national funding, protecting heritage that would otherwise be left to deteriorate.
3 causes are listed in Bulgaria, each with its own verified organization. $341,097 has been distributed to causes in Bulgaria since 2021.
