Why this matters in Malawi
Most families in Malawi farm small plots of rainfed maize, and a single growing season, roughly November to April, decides whether a household eats for the year. When rains start late or stop early, or when a cyclone or drought strikes, as Cyclone Freddy did in 2023 and the El Niño drought did in 2024, families can lose most of their harvest. Formal irrigation covers only a small share of farmland, much of it on commercial estates.
Many villages lie near rivers, streams or dambo wetlands that hold water into the dry season, but a smallholder cannot lift that water onto fields by hand at any useful scale. Treadle pumps, small motorized pumps and pipes cost more than one family can pay, and fuel has grown more expensive with repeated devaluations of the kwacha. When a cooperative shares equipment, members can grow a dry-season crop of maize, vegetables or beans, adding a second harvest and spreading income across the year.

How they work: Total LandCare uses community-based approaches and pairs irrigation with soil and water conservation, including conservation agriculture, vetiver hedgerows, silt traps and gully reclamation. Tree planting on farms, homesteads, stream banks and degraded hillsides is another strand of its work. The organization also operates in Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania, and an agreement with Washington State University links its field programs to research and to policy information for decision-makers.
