Why this matters in the United States

Community college students are more likely than university students to work while studying, to be raising children and to come from households with no financial cushion. Many receive Pell Grants that cover tuition, but rent, transport and childcare are another matter, and surveys by researchers such as the Hope Center have repeatedly found high rates of food and housing insecurity among two-year college students.

For these students one unplanned expense can unravel a semester. A car repair, an overdue utility bill or a gap in childcare can mean missed classes, a failed course and, through academic progress rules, lost financial aid. Federal aid arrives on fixed schedules, loans take time, and few colleges have money they can release in a day or two. Small grants paid at the moment of crisis keep a student enrolled at exactly the point where dropping out would otherwise follow.

What your gift pays for

  • One-time emergency grants for car repairs, rent shortfalls or utility bills that threaten enrollment
  • Replacement laptops and internet access for students whose coursework depends on them
  • Transit passes and gas money for commuting to classes and clinical placements
  • Childcare costs during exam weeks for student parents who have no family nearby to help

Scholarship America (Dreamkeepers) · United States

US IRS EIN · No. 23-7039405

Founded 1958 · Headquarters: Bloomington

Dreamkeepers programme gives emergency grants to keep community college students enrolled.

How they work: Dreamkeepers works through partner community colleges rather than taking applications centrally. Each college identifies students facing a short-term financial crisis and administers the grants through its own staff, who can confirm the need and release money quickly. Grants do not have to be repaid. Scholarship America provides the funding and program framework, while the college decides case by case, which keeps decisions close to the student and fast enough to matter before a withdrawal.

Track record: Dreamkeepers, launched in 2005 at 11 community colleges, together with the Angel Fund awarded over $845,000 in emergency aid to more than 2,400 students in its first two years.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
