Why this matters in Belarus

Villages across Belarus have emptied as younger people moved to Minsk, regional capitals or abroad. Those left behind are mostly widowed women in their seventies and eighties, reflecting the large gap in life expectancy between men and women, often living in old wooden houses heated by stoves, with the nearest shop or clinic some distance away and buses that run a few times a week.

State home-care services reach many older people, but visits are scheduled around practical tasks such as buying groceries, cleaning or paying utility bills, and social workers carry caseloads spread across wide rural areas. That leaves little time for conversation. Loneliness among older people who live alone is linked to depression, poorer health and missed signs of decline. Regular visits from a familiar volunteer add companionship, and a second pair of eyes that notices when someone is unwell, out of firewood or no longer coping.

What your gift pays for

  • Home visits by social workers who shop, clean, collect medicines and help with paperwork for older people living alone
  • Fuel and transport for social workers covering scattered rural households far from the district center
  • Firewood, phone credit or reading glasses for older residents when visits reveal an urgent need
  • Training and coordination of volunteers who add companionship visits to scheduled home care

Organization

Territorial centres of social services (Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Belarus) · Belarus

Government body

State territorial social service centres provide home-based social services to elderly and disabled people living alone in Belarus.

How they work: Territorial centres of social services operate in every district and city under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. Their home-care departments assign social workers to older and disabled people who cannot fully look after themselves, visiting on a regular schedule to shop, clean, collect medicines and help with paperwork. Centres also run day-care departments and emergency social assistance, and they can coordinate volunteer help alongside their staff services.

Track record: As of October 2016, Belarus's social workers provided home-based services to 88,800 elderly and disabled people, most of them rural residents.

Giving in Belarus

Political repression forms the backdrop for two of the three causes in Belarus, one of the world's most restrictive media environments. The Belarusian Association of Journalists funds legal defense for reporters prosecuted over critical coverage, and Libereco supports the families of political prisoners. A third cause funds home visits and practical help for elderly people living alone through territorial social service centers, so the list covers everyday social care as well as rights work.

3 causes are listed in Belarus, each with its own verified organization. $339,145 has been distributed to causes in Belarus since 2021.
