Funds veterinary outreach for working animals in rural farming communities.
Why this matters in Guatemala
Horses, mules and donkeys still do heavy work in rural Guatemala, hauling firewood, water and harvested coffee or maize along steep paths where vehicles cannot go, and carrying produce to market. For families in the highlands of Chimaltenango or on the farms of Petén, a working animal can be the difference between selling a crop and leaving it in the field.
Veterinary care rarely reaches these places. Private vets cluster in towns and focus on cattle or pets, and a farm visit, with travel, is beyond what many owners can pay. Common problems such as harness sores, overloading, parasites, overgrown hooves and dental pain are cheap to prevent but costly when ignored, and an animal that goes lame can halt a household's income overnight. Owners usually care about their animals but have had no chance to learn basic welfare and first aid, so practices pass down by habit rather than by evidence.
What your gift pays for
- Training for community welfare assessors who give basic care and flag sick animals early
- Veterinary visits, deworming and wound treatment for working horses, mules and donkeys
- Owner workshops on loading, harness fit, feeding and rest for working animals
- Health record-keeping for carriage horses, so owners can show their animals are well cared for
Organization
Fundación Equinos Sanos para el Pueblo (ESAP) · Guatemala
Headquarters: Antigua Guatemala
Antigua Guatemala-based foundation providing veterinary care and owner education for working horses, mules and donkeys in rural communities.
How they work: ESAP's model puts skills in the villages themselves. It trains local residents as community assessors of equine welfare, who provide basic care for animals in their own communities and alert ESAP when a horse or mule needs a vet, so a small team can support many places. Owner education is built around the internationally used "five freedoms" framework for animal welfare. ESAP has worked with Brooke, the UK working-animal charity, and with Guatemala's Ministry of Agriculture.
Track record: ESAP has trained community equine-welfare assessors, working with 10 communities in Petén and 20 in Chimaltenango, and offers vet services to Antigua carriage-horse owners.

Giving in Guatemala
Language and terrain set the agenda in rural Guatemala. Many children begin school speaking a Mayan language rather than Spanish, so one cause funds bilingual teaching materials, and another provides practical skills training for rural youth with limited access to secondary school. Mountain villages without piped water gain protected springs and gravity-fed systems through Agua del Pueblo, and working animals on small farms receive veterinary care. Partners are Guatemalan organizations with roots in the communities they serve.
4 causes are listed in Guatemala, each with its own verified organization. $281,970 has been distributed to causes in Guatemala since 2021.
