Why this matters in Kenya

Cheap illicit alcohol, sold in informal settlements for a fraction of the price of licensed beer, has caused repeated mass poisonings in Kenya and accounts for much of the dependence seen in poor neighborhoods. Heroin use, most visible on the coast and in parts of Nairobi, adds the risk of HIV and hepatitis through shared needles. Those most affected are often casual laborers, young people and women living in settlements where drinking dens operate next to homes.

Residential rehabilitation is largely private and priced far beyond what a day laborer earns, and public addiction services are thin outside a few large hospitals. Families often wait for a crisis, then face a choice between debt and doing nothing. Outpatient care lets a person keep working and living at home while attending counseling, which matters when a household cannot spare an income for weeks. Stigma, and the belief that addiction is a moral failing rather than a treatable condition, keeps many from asking for help at all.

Organization

SAPTA (Support for Addictions Prevention and Treatment in Africa) · Kenya

Founded 2004 · Headquarters: Nairobi

Nairobi-based NGO providing addiction prevention, outpatient treatment and counselling, and training for addiction professionals.

How they work: SAPTA combines direct treatment with building the profession around it. Clients attend outpatient counseling while living at home, and the organization also works with co-occurring depression, anxiety and trauma rather than treating substance use in isolation. It trains addiction counselors, prepares candidates for the international ICCE counselor certification exam and helps other treatment centers raise their standards, so its work also strengthens a small national workforce. Prevention programs focus on children, adolescents and young adults.

Track record: Registered in Kenya in 2004, SAPTA provides outpatient counselling and treatment for substance use disorders, focusing on people in slums and marginalised groups.

Giving in Kenya

Housing is the dominant theme in Kenya, approached from several directions. Muungano wa Wanavijiji upgrades walkways, lighting and drainage in informal urban settlements instead of clearing them, the Kenya Society of Care Leavers provides peer mentoring and transition support for young people leaving institutional care, and Habitat for Humanity Kenya repairs unsafe rural homes for elderly residents. A fourth cause, with SAPTA, funds outpatient addiction treatment for people who cannot afford private rehabilitation.

4 causes are listed in Kenya, each with its own verified organization. $255,207 has been distributed to causes in Kenya since 2021.
