Funds peatland and boreal forest conservation projects supporting carbon storage and biodiversity.
Why this matters in Finland
Peat bogs and fens once covered roughly a third of the country's land area, and over the past century more than half of them were ditched, mostly to grow timber. Drained peat dries out and decomposes, releasing carbon stored over thousands of years, while open mires used by cranes, waders and specialist plants close over into dense, uniform stands of spruce and pine. The south has lost the most, and intact mires there are now scarce.
Old-growth boreal forest faces a parallel squeeze. Commercial forestry relies on clear-cutting and short rotations, which remove the dead and decaying wood that a large share of forest species need. State programs pay for some protection and restoration, but most forest and drained peatland is privately owned, so progress depends on willing landowners, survey work to identify the best sites and steady pressure for decisions before habitats are logged. Blocking ditches is relatively cheap and raises water levels quickly, yet many promising sites remain untouched.
What your gift pays for
- Field surveys that identify drained mires and old-growth stands worth protecting or restoring
- Ditch blocking with peat dams to raise water tables on drained peatland
- Expert advice for private landowners who are considering voluntary protection agreements for their land
- Mapping and documentation of threatened forest sites to back formal protection proposals
Organization
Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (Suomen luonnonsuojeluliitto) · Finland
Finnish Business ID (Y-tunnus), PRH/YTJ · No. 0116956-1
Founded 1938 · Headquarters: Helsinki
Finland's largest nature NGO, active in peatland and forest conservation.
How they work: Much of the association's work happens through its local associations and district organizations, whose members map valuable sites, file protection proposals and follow land-use and logging plans in their own municipalities. Nationally it campaigns for stronger peatland and forest protection in legislation and state programs, comments on forestry and land-use policy, and publishes analyses of how drainage and logging affect biodiversity and carbon storage.
Track record: Founded in 1938, it is Finland's largest nature conservation NGO, with about 29,000 members, some 150 local associations and 15 district organisations, and runs peatland restoration and forest protection work.

Giving in Finland
Rising youth joblessness, at a time when Finland has one of the highest unemployment rates in the OECD, connects two of the Finnish causes. Vamos, run by the Helsinki Deaconess Foundation, provides job-readiness training for young jobseekers, and MIELI Mental Health Finland provides early mental health support for young people, from anonymous chat to coping-skills lessons in schools. The third looks to the land, protecting peatlands and boreal forests that store carbon and support biodiversity, through the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.
3 causes are listed in Finland, each with its own verified organization. $204,461 has been distributed to causes in Finland since 2021.
