Why this matters in the Netherlands

Roughly a quarter of the country lies below sea level and much more is prone to flooding, so water management has long meant dikes, pumps and hard engineering. That approach drained most of the original marshes and peat bogs, and the wetlands that remain are often small, isolated and dependent on careful water control. Meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit have declined sharply as farmland was drained and intensified, and lakes like the Markermeer turned cloudy with fine silt that suppresses plant life and the fish and birds that feed on it.

Engineers now increasingly favor working with natural processes: marshes, reed beds and salt marsh that absorb wave energy, hold water during peaks and build up with sediment. Government and water boards fund the large infrastructure, but buying land, rewetting it and managing it for nature over decades falls largely to conservation organizations. Restored wetlands also store carbon, filter water and give people in densely populated cities places to see wildlife close to home.

What your gift pays for

  • Rewetting of drained land by raising water levels and removing old drainage
  • Reed bed and marsh planting to establish vegetation on newly created wetland
  • Bird and vegetation monitoring that tracks how restored wetlands develop over time
  • Purchase of farmland bordering existing reserves so it can be returned to marsh

Kamer van Koophandel (KvK) / Belastingdienst RSIN · No. KvK 40516730; RSIN 002565237

Founded 1905 · Headquarters: Amersfoort

Dutch nature conservation society managing wetland restoration such as around Naardermeer and Marker Wadden.

How they work: Natuurmonumenten is a membership association that buys land and manages it as nature reserves, with its own rangers and many volunteers doing work such as mowing, wildlife counts and visitor guidance. At Marker Wadden it partnered with Rijkswaterstaat, the national water authority, using sand, clay and silt from the lake bed to build the islands and then leaving much of the colonization to nature. It also works with water boards on water levels in and around its reserves.

Track record: Natuurmonumenten leads Marker Wadden, building islands, marshes and mudflats from lake sediment in a restoration project aiming to cover up to 100 square kilometres.

Giving in the Netherlands

Water, nature and housing security run through the Dutch causes. With a large share of the country below sea level, restored coastal wetlands serve as flood defense as well as habitat, and unused city land becomes pollinator corridors for declining bee populations. Social causes include adult literacy and Dutch-language classes for newcomers, companionship and practical support that help seniors keep living at home, and rent-arrears mediation by Leger des Heils that heads off evictions. Partners also include Natuurmonumenten and Nationaal Ouderenfonds.

5 causes are listed in the Netherlands, each with its own verified organization. $356,435 has been distributed to causes in the Netherlands since 2021.
