Funds community-led plastic waste cleanup along coastal fishing communities.
Why this matters in Ghana
Fishing towns along Greater Accra's shoreline, from Jamestown and Chorkor to Nungua, sit at the end of a drainage system that carries much of the city's waste to the sea. During the rains, open drains and the Odaw River flush sachet-water bags, food packaging and bottles into the Korle Lagoon and onto the beaches where canoes land and catches are sorted and smoked. Plastic snags in nets and outboard propellers, and litter blocks gutters and holds stagnant water in crowded neighborhoods.
Municipal collection has struggled to keep pace with the city's growth, and a large part of the waste that washes ashore was dropped well inland. Coastal households did not create most of it, yet they live with the consequences. Cleanups bring immediate relief to landing beaches, and the counts gathered on the sand, showing which items and brands turn up, give advocates evidence for pressing producers and local authorities to deal with waste upstream.
What your gift pays for
- Gloves, rakes, sacks and protective gear for community volunteers working on landing beaches
- Trucks that move collected waste to approved disposal sites and recycling collectors
- Sorting and counting at each cleanup to record which items and brands pollute the shore
- Awareness sessions with schools and fishing households on separating and cutting single-use plastic
Organization
Plastic Punch · Ghana
Founded 2018 · Headquarters: Accra
Ghanaian movement organizing community beach cleanups against marine plastic pollution.
How they work: Founded in January 2018 by a group of young advocates, Plastic Punch pairs beach cleanups with citizen science. Volunteers sort and record what they collect, and the organization uses that data on what is polluting the coast, and who produced it, to argue for extended producer responsibility and better waste management. It works with schools, companies, the EU delegation and UNDP to mobilize volunteers, and passes sorted material to recyclers where possible. Its own leadership stresses that cleanups alone are not the answer.
Track record: With the EU, Plastic Punch organised a September 2020 cleanup at Nungua beach, Accra, where 220 volunteers collected 5.3 tons of waste, including 4.1 tons of plastic.

Giving in Ghana
Practical skills and basic infrastructure are the common thread for Ghana. Public secondary schools receive shared lab equipment so physics and chemistry can be taught hands-on, and young people who left school early gain apprenticeships in skilled trades. Beyond the classroom, boreholes replace unprotected surface water in rural communities, and coastal fishing towns organize plastic cleanups. Partners are Ghanaian bodies, from CAMFED Ghana and OIC Ghana to the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and the grassroots group Plastic Punch.
