Funds land purchase and reforestation in cloud forest corridors that connect fragmented wildlife habitats.
Why this matters in Costa Rica
Cloud forest grows only where mountains catch persistent cloud, and on the Tilarán range around Monteverde that band is narrow. Resplendent quetzals, three-wattled bellbirds and other fruit-eating birds move seasonally between the high ridges and the lower Pacific and Caribbean slopes, following trees as they come into fruit. When the land between protected blocks is pasture, coffee or roadside development, those movements break down, and isolated populations become more exposed to disease, fire and a warming climate that pushes the cloud line uphill.
Existing reserves protect the core, but much of the connecting land is privately owned, and owners face steady pressure to sell for tourism lodges or clear for cattle. Buying key parcels when they come on the market, and replanting former pasture with native trees, is often the only way to keep a corridor continuous. Restored strips also protect springs that feed nearby towns and farms, so the benefit reaches people living downslope as well as wildlife.
What your gift pays for
- Purchase of privately owned parcels that close gaps between existing protected forest blocks
- Native seedlings grown from local seed, plus planting labor on former cattle pasture
- Ranger patrols that deter hunting, illegal logging and encroachment on newly acquired land
- Fencing and early weeding so young trees can outgrow aggressive pasture grasses
Organization
Monteverde Conservation League (Children's Eternal Rainforest) · Costa Rica
Costa Rica cédula jurídica (Registro Nacional, asociación) · No. 3-002-075864
Founded 1986 · Headquarters: Monteverde
Costa Rican NGO that purchases and protects cloud forest land around Monteverde.
How they work: The League manages its reserve as private protected land and keeps it under watch with its own staff of forest rangers. Visitor income from the public trails at Bajo del Tigre and from field stations inside the reserve, such as San Gerardo and Pocosol, helps pay for that protection. Alongside land purchase, it runs environmental education with schools in surrounding communities and has worked with neighboring farmers on tree planting, so conservation extends beyond the reserve boundary.
Track record: The Monteverde Conservation League's Children's Eternal Rainforest, started in 1987 with $18,000 raised by Swedish schoolchildren, spanned 18,000 hectares by 1998 and now covers about 23,000 ha.

Giving in Costa Rica
Habitat protection is what the two Costa Rican causes share, one in the mountains and one on the coast. The Monteverde Conservation League buys and reforests land in cloud forest corridors that link fragmented habitat, extending the Children's Eternal Rainforest. LAST protects sea turtle nests on beaches under pressure from coastal development. Both build on Costa Rica's long record of conservation and its extensive network of protected areas.
2 causes are listed in Costa Rica, each with its own verified organization. $205,091 has been distributed to causes in Costa Rica since 2021.
