Why this matters in Portugal

Low wages have collided with a housing crisis, especially in Lisbon and Porto, where rents have risen far faster than pay as tourism and foreign buyers pushed up prices. Households with one or two incomes, including care workers, cleaners, shop staff and recent immigrants, can find that rent takes most of their earnings and food is what gets cut. Charities that once mainly served unemployed people and pensioners now see working families in the queue.

Portugal's minimum wage has risen in recent years but remains among the lower ones in Western Europe, and social support such as the minimum income is set well below city living costs. Food banks cover part of the shortfall by passing donated and surplus food to local charities, but supplies arrive unevenly through the year, much of it after national collection drives. Restocking between those drives keeps shelves supplied in the months when donations dip and demand does not.

What your gift pays for

  • Purchase of staple foods to fill gaps between national collection campaigns
  • Transport and cold storage that let food banks accept fresh surplus
  • Warehouse costs for sorting food and dispatching it to partner charities

Organization

Federação Portuguesa dos Bancos Alimentares contra a Fome · Portugal

Portuguese NIF (tax number) · No. 504335642

Founded 1999 · Headquarters: Lisboa

National federation of Portugal's food banks, collecting and distributing food via local charities.

How they work: Portugal's food banks run largely on volunteer labor. They collect surplus from producers, distributors and retailers, and twice a year hold national collection campaigns in which volunteers at supermarket entrances ask shoppers to donate staples. Food is not handed to individuals directly; it goes to local social solidarity institutions, parish centers and charities, which know their beneficiaries and prepare baskets or meals for them.

Track record: In 2024 Portugal's 21 food banks distributed 27.5 million kg of food via 2,300 social institutions, reaching about 360,000 people facing food insecurity.

Giving in Portugal

Portugal's decades-long shift toward treating drug use as a health matter rather than a crime underpins one of its causes, which funds peer-led harm-reduction and health services through GAT. The others respond to everyday strains: psychological support for people with mental illness where waits for therapy can last months, food bank restocking as more working households seek help, and free introductory coding courses for young teenagers. Partners are Portuguese organizations, including the national federation of food banks.

4 causes are listed in Portugal, each with its own verified organization. $305,900 has been distributed to causes in Portugal since 2021.
