Why this matters in the Central African Republic

Since the conflict that began in 2012 and 2013, armed groups have controlled large parts of the Central African Republic. Children have been used as fighters, messengers, porters and cooks, and girls have faced sexual exploitation. Repeated waves of displacement have separated many more children from their families, as people fled attacks in different directions and settled in camps or with distant relatives.

Release from an armed group is only a beginning. Children may return to communities that fear or reject them, parents may have been displaced or killed, and many have missed years of school. Social services are very limited outside the capital, many births are never registered, and poor roads and insecurity make tracing a family slow and costly. Without structured support, children face a real risk of being drawn back into armed groups or exploited again. Reintegration holds when a child has a safe interim home, a family that has been found and prepared, and a reason to stay, such as school or training.

What your gift pays for

  • Family tracing work to locate parents or relatives and prepare them for a child's return
  • Interim care with trained foster families while tracing and reunification are arranged
  • Psychosocial support for children recovering from frightening and harmful experiences
  • School fees, supplies or vocational training that give returning children a stable routine

Organization

Plan International - Central African Republic · Central African Republic

Companies House, England (parent: Plan Limited) · No. 3001663

Founded 2014 · Headquarters: Bangui

Supports reintegration of children released from armed groups in CAR.

How they work: Plan International's child protection work in the country follows the established interagency approach to reintegration. Children who are unaccompanied or have left armed groups are placed in temporary family-based care, their relatives are traced, and reunification follows once it is judged safe. Community-based child protection networks help follow children after their return and identify others at risk. Support continues through schooling or skills training, coordinated with UNICEF, government social services and other child protection agencies.

Track record: Since October 2014 Plan identified 539 children associated with armed groups in three CAR provinces, trained 142 foster families and helped 267 such children back into school.

Giving in the Central African Republic

Recovery from conflict is the common ground for the Central African Republic. Medecins Sans Frontieres repairs, staffs and supplies primary health clinics in areas emerging from fighting, and Plan International traces the families of children who were separated from them or released from armed groups, then supports their return home. One cause rebuilds basic health services; the other rebuilds family ties, with both partners working in some of the country's most affected areas.

2 causes are listed in the Central African Republic, each with its own verified organization. $227,371 has been distributed to causes in the Central African Republic since 2021.
