Runs community outreach in districts with Bangladesh's highest recorded rates of child marriage, funding scholarships that keep girls in school as an alternative.
Why this matters in Bangladesh
Half of Bangladeshi women now in their early twenties were married before 18, according to UNICEF, one of the highest rates in the world despite a legal minimum marriage age of 18 for women. The Child Marriage Restraint Act of 2017 also allows marriage below that age in undefined 'special cases' with court and parental consent, a provision campaigners say weakens enforcement. Rates tend to be highest in rural northern and south-western districts, including areas hit hard by river erosion and cyclones.
Families marry daughters early for interlocking reasons: dowry demands that rise as a girl gets older, fears for her safety and reputation, and the cost of keeping her in school once fees, uniforms, private tutoring and travel add up. A scholarship removes one of these pressures directly, and outreach to parents, religious leaders and marriage registrars works on the rest. Girls who complete secondary school marry later and have more say over their own lives.

Organization
BRAC · Bangladesh
Founded 1972 · Headquarters: Dhaka
Bangladeshi NGO running community programmes and research to prevent child marriage.
How they work: BRAC's work on child marriage draws on networks it has built over decades in rural communities. Polli Shomaj, village-level women's groups organized through its community programs, report planned child marriages and engage families and local officials to stop them. Adolescent clubs give girls a regular meeting place for life-skills and livelihood training. BRAC also conducts research on what keeps girls unmarried and in school, and works alongside local administration and union parishads.
Track record: BRAC's Social Empowerment and Legal Protection programme launched Shopnosarthi in 2023, targeting about 54,000 girls aged 13-17 at risk of child marriage in 31 districts.

Giving in Bangladesh
Floods, refugees and pressures on childhood connect the Bangladesh causes. Two serve the Rohingya camps around Cox's Bazar, one of the world's largest and most protracted refugee settlements, through informal learning centers and shelter repair. Others build raised latrines in low-lying delta communities, fund schooling, shelter and skills training that help children move from garment and brick-kiln work into learning, and fund scholarships that keep girls in school in districts with high child marriage rates. BRAC, one of the largest development organizations based in Bangladesh, partners on most of them.
