Why this matters in Bangladesh

Children work in brick kilns through the dry season, carrying and molding bricks in heat and dust, often alongside parents who took advance payments from kiln owners and must work off the debt. In Dhaka's informal economy, children sort waste, work in small workshops that supply the garment trade, and run errands in tea stalls and markets. Large export garment factories largely removed child workers after the 1990s, but subcontracted, home-based and informal work never fully followed.

Primary school is free in principle, yet uniforms, exam fees, private coaching and the earnings a child gives up make it costly for poor families in Bangladesh. Many working children come from households that moved to the city after river erosion, floods or crop failure, and their income covers rent or food. Taking a child out of work without replacing that money often fails: the family slides into debt and the child goes back. Schooling backed by meals, shelter where needed and regular contact with parents gives a child time to settle into learning and helps families see education as a realistic path.

Organization

Aparajeyo-Bangladesh · Bangladesh

Founded 1976 · Headquarters: Dhaka

Bangladeshi NGO providing education and protection services for working and street children.

How they work: Aparajeyo-Bangladesh works with children in and around Dhaka's streets and slums, combining shelters for children with nowhere safe to sleep, day care and community-based education centers, and both non-formal and formal schooling. Older children can move into skills training and job placement, and where possible children are reunited with their families. Parent and community meetings back up the education work, and the organization emphasizes children's participation in decisions about their own lives. It works with government ministries and UN partners, including UNICEF.

Track record: Founded in 1995 (with activities since 1976), Aparajeyo-Bangladesh provides services to socially excluded children, youth and women in and around Dhaka's slums.

Giving in Bangladesh

Floods, refugees and pressures on childhood connect the Bangladesh causes. Two serve the Rohingya camps around Cox's Bazar, one of the world's largest and most protracted refugee settlements, through informal learning centers and shelter repair. Others build raised latrines in low-lying delta communities, fund schooling, shelter and skills training that help children move from garment and brick-kiln work into learning, and fund scholarships that keep girls in school in districts with high child marriage rates. BRAC, one of the largest development organizations based in Bangladesh, partners on most of them.
