Funds flood rescue, food and relief supplies during seasonal flooding, delivered by a long-established Thai-Chinese charitable foundation and its trained volunteers.
Why this matters in Thailand
The monsoon, roughly May to October, regularly floods the Chao Phraya basin and parts of the north and northeast. The 2011 floods covered much of the central plains, including industrial estates and outer Bangkok, and in 2024 storms linked to Typhoon Yagi brought severe flooding to northern provinces such as Chiang Rai. Rural households in low-lying areas lose rice crops, livestock and road access, sometimes for weeks.
State disaster agencies run evacuations and pay compensation, but compensation arrives after the water recedes, and official evacuation centers fill quickly. Temples, with their raised halls, open grounds and kitchens, have long sheltered villagers and fed them during floods, and monks are trusted figures who know every household. Charitable foundations rooted in Thai-Chinese community giving work alongside them in Bangkok and the provinces, sending volunteers, boats and supplies where government help is slow to arrive.

Organization
Poh Teck Tung Foundation · Thailand
Founded 1909 · Headquarters: Bangkok
Bangkok-based charitable foundation providing rescue services and disaster relief, including flood relief, across Thailand.
How they work: Poh Teck Tung runs on large numbers of trained volunteers and is best known in Bangkok for answering emergency calls with rescue vehicles and first aid. During floods it sends rescue teams and hands out relief bags of food and essentials, often working with local authorities. Its charitable tradition comes from Teochew Chinese benevolent practice, and it is also known for collecting and giving funeral rites to unclaimed bodies, a merit-making practice that long predates its rescue work.
Track record: Active since 1909 and registered in 1938, the foundation aids victims of floods, storms and fires, and its volunteers were incorporated into Thailand's emergency medical service.
