Funds humanitarian aid for people crossing the Poland-Belarus border, an increasingly used and dangerous displacement route.
Why this matters in Poland
People attempting this crossing come from Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Iraq and several African countries, among others. Many flew to Minsk or were moved toward the frontier by Belarusian authorities, then entered the forests and wetlands of eastern Poland. Since 2021 a tall steel barrier has gone up on the Polish side, and pushbacks to Belarus have been widely reported, so some people spend days or weeks trapped in swamp and woodland between the two states.
Hypothermia, exhaustion, injuries from the fence and drowning in rivers and marshes have caused deaths on both sides of the line. A restricted zone along the border has at times limited access for journalists and aid workers, and people in hiding are often afraid to call emergency services because they fear being sent back. Volunteers responding to requests for help fill a gap left by both governments, bringing warmth, food and first aid to people who otherwise receive none.

Organization
Grupa Granica · Poland
Founded 2021
Grassroots network giving humanitarian aid to people crossing the Poland-Belarus border.
How they work: Grupa Granica brings together Polish NGOs, local residents and independent activists, and much of its work depends on volunteers who answer requests for help. Responders provide essentials and first aid, and the network calls on medics, lawyers and interpreters when someone wants to apply for asylum or needs hospital care. It also documents rights violations at the border and publishes reports, using that evidence to press the authorities to respect the right to seek protection.
Track record: Grupa Granica is a network of organisations providing support and assistance to people on the move at the Poland-Belarus border.

Giving in Poland
Displacement across Poland's eastern borders shapes three of its four causes. Polish-language bridging classes help refugee children settle into school, job-placement support helps displaced Ukrainian families enter the labor market, and Grupa Granica provides humanitarian aid to people crossing the dangerous Belarus border. The fourth supports a nationwide association of Polish UN peacekeeping veterans that keeps former peacekeepers connected. Partners are Polish civil society organizations, including the Ocalenie Foundation, which runs both integration programs.
4 causes are listed in Poland, each with its own verified organization. $289,426 has been distributed to causes in Poland since 2021.
