Helps school leavers in areas with above-average youth unemployment start and stay in apprenticeships, through preparation, mentoring and help with early costs such as travel and work kit.
Why this matters in the United Kingdom
Apprenticeship starts among young people in England have fallen over the past decade, even though employers keep reporting shortages of skilled trades and technicians. Teenagers in former industrial towns, coastal communities and parts of the North East and Midlands are most exposed, because local employers tend to be small firms that cannot carry the cost of training a novice for months before that person is productive.
Apprentices must be paid, but the apprentice minimum wage is low, and the first months bring costs for travel, tools, work clothing and sometimes a move closer to the workplace. For a school leaver from a low-income household, those costs can make an apprenticeship look worse than a zero-hours job that pays more now. Help with those early costs, plus preparation that makes a young person ready from day one, lowers the risk for a small employer and lets the trainee stay long enough to qualify.
What your gift pays for
- Employer partnerships that turn short pre-apprenticeship courses into interviews and placements
- Travel passes, work boots, uniforms and tools needed from day one
- Pre-employment preparation for young people not yet ready to apply for an apprenticeship
- Mentoring through the early months, when apprentices are most likely to drop out
Organization
The King's Trust · United Kingdom
Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1079675
Founded 1976 · Headquarters: London
UK youth charity supporting young people into jobs, training and apprenticeships.
How they work: The King's Trust works with young people aged 11 to 30, many of them unemployed, leaving care or finishing school with few qualifications. Its programs combine short employability courses, one-to-one support from development workers and volunteer mentors, and partnerships with employers who offer interviews, placements or jobs at the end. Courses such as Get Into are run with specific employers or sectors, and schools-based programs aim to keep younger teenagers engaged before they leave education.
Track record: The King's Trust's 'Power Up' apprenticeship support programme reported a 93% apprentice retention rate at week 9, against a typical 47% at week 4.

Giving in the United Kingdom
Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
