Funds legal representation for trafficking survivors pursuing cases against traffickers, a process survivors otherwise cannot afford.
Why this matters in Thailand
Most trafficking survivors identified in Thailand are migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos who were recruited into fishing boats, seafood processing, farms, factories or domestic work and then held through debt, confiscated documents or violence. In recent years people have also been trafficked through the country into scam compounds across its borders. Many survivors speak little Thai, are far from home and depend on shelters or employers for permission to stay.
Thai law allows victims to join prosecutions as co-plaintiffs and to seek compensation, but doing so means hiring a lawyer, attending hearings over months or years, and testifying while associates of the accused may be watching. Prosecutors focus on securing a conviction, and survivors with their own counsel are better placed to protect their safety in court, press their claims and pursue payment when convicted traffickers do not pay what courts order. Without that help, accepting repatriation and dropping the case is often the only realistic choice.
What your gift pays for
- Attorneys who represent survivors as co-plaintiffs in criminal trafficking prosecutions and compensation claims
- Interpreters so survivors can follow proceedings and testify in their own language
- Travel and accommodation for survivors and witnesses attending distant court hearings
- Legal follow-up to enforce compensation orders that convicted traffickers have not paid
Organization
Human Rights and Development Foundation (HRDF) · Thailand
Headquarters: Bangkok
Thai foundation providing legal aid and litigation for migrant workers and trafficking victims, including trafficking prosecutions and compensation claims.
How they work: HRDF lawyers seek permission to visit survivors in government shelters and, with their consent, represent them as co-plaintiffs alongside the public prosecutor. In a case involving Cambodian fishing workers heard in Ranong, its attorneys petitioned senior judges over witness safety and their own access to clients, grounding the arguments in fair-trial rights under the Thai Constitution and international law. This work runs through a dedicated anti-trafficking in labor project.
Track record: HRDF provides legal aid to migrant workers in Thailand and has publicly raised the issue of trafficking victims' unpaid court-ordered compensation.
