Why this matters in Zambia

The Luangwa Valley in eastern Zambia holds one of the country's most important elephant populations, and it was hit hard by commercial poaching in the 1970s and 1980s, when black rhino were wiped out of the valley. Today the main daily threat is wire snares set for bushmeat. Snares catch elephants, lions, wild dogs and antelope indiscriminately, and an animal can drag one for weeks as it cuts deeper. Demand for ivory has not gone away either.

Most of the pressure comes from outside the park boundary. Communities in the surrounding game management areas live alongside wildlife with little cash income, elephants raid their crops, and bushmeat sells. Public wildlife budgets are stretched across a vast area, so ranger numbers, vehicles, rations and radios rarely match the distances involved. A single snare line can run for hundreds of meters, and finding it before it kills depends on rangers being on the ground often enough.

What your gift pays for

  • Field kit, including boots, tents, GPS units and radios, for joint patrol teams
  • Snare removal and emergency veterinary treatment for wounded elephants and other wildlife
  • Care and training for detection dogs and their handlers who track poachers and find contraband

Organization

Conservation South Luangwa (CSL) · Zambia

Charity Commission for England and Wales (UK affiliate: Conservation South Luangwa UK) · No. 1206897

Founded 2003 · Headquarters: Mfuwe

Zambian NGO supporting anti-poaching scouts protecting elephants in the Luangwa Valley.

How they work: CSL works in partnership with Zambia's Department of National Parks and Wildlife: the rangers it supports patrol jointly with government wildlife officers, covering known snaring hotspots on day patrols and remote sectors on deployments lasting several weeks. Regular aerial surveillance flights guide ground teams, a detection-dog unit tracks suspects and searches for wildlife products, and an on-site vet treats snared and injured animals. A community department works on human-wildlife conflict and livelihoods in surrounding villages.

Track record: Founded in 2003, CSL supports over 90 anti-poaching rangers in the South Luangwa Valley and has removed over 10,000 wire snares since its inception.

Giving in Zambia

Rural livelihoods and wildlife link the four Zambian causes. Smallholder households recovering from consecutive poor harvests receive training in conservation farming, and Heifer International funds veterinary access for farmers whose income depends on livestock. In South Luangwa, rangers protect elephants and other wildlife from snaring and ivory poaching. MISA Zambia supports community radio and rural journalists in areas that national media rarely reach, adding an information dimension alongside farming and conservation.

4 causes are listed in Zambia, each with its own verified organization. $374,290 has been distributed to causes in Zambia since 2021.
