Funds community learning centers for children in the North-West and South-West regions whose schools have closed because of the conflict.
Why this matters in Cameroon
Separatist armed groups in the North-West and South-West have enforced school boycotts since late 2016, and attacks on students and teachers have kept thousands of schools shut. In 2023, OCHA reported about 2,245 schools still not functioning in the two regions, with close to 667,000 school-age children needing education assistance. Some children have now spent most of their school years with little or no classroom learning.
The conflict grew out of grievances in the English-speaking regions over the place of their education and legal systems in a mostly francophone state, which turned schools into symbols and targets. Families weigh their children's education against real danger. Many have fled to the bush, to safer towns, or to French-speaking cities where children struggle in French-language classes. Learning close to home and low in profile lets children keep up reading and arithmetic until it is safe to return to regular schools, and gives them a protective routine.

Organization
Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Cameroon · Cameroon
Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Stiftelsen Flyktninghjelpen / NRC) · No. 977538319
Founded 2017 · Headquarters: Yaoundé
Runs education programmes in Cameroon's North-West and South-West regions, with education staff based in Buea and Bamenda.
How they work: NRC's education teams recruit and train teachers from the communities they serve and adapt how learning is organized to local conditions. Its Better Learning Programme helps children cope with stress and fear so they can concentrate, and its catch-up and accelerated courses are designed to return children to formal schooling. Education is usually combined with NRC's other services for displaced families, such as legal help with documents.
Track record: In 2024 NRC enrolled 5,000 children in Cameroon's Far North region in four-week catch-up classes in maths, reading and writing.

Giving in Cameroon
Conflict in two different parts of Cameroon is the backdrop for its two causes. In the English-speaking North-West and South-West regions, where fighting has closed schools, the Norwegian Refugee Council runs community learning centers. In the Far North, families affected by armed-group violence and poor harvests receive seeds, tools and food support through the Cameroon Red Cross Society. One focuses on keeping children learning, the other on restoring food security for farming families.
