Funds companionship and practical support that help older people keep living independently at home, from regular volunteer phone calls to minibus trips for outings and errands.
Why this matters in the Netherlands
Dutch care policy has shifted firmly toward people living at home for as long as possible. Since the 2015 reforms, a place in a nursing home requires a high level of care need, and many older people who once would have moved to a care home now stay in houses with steep stairs, raised thresholds and baths they can no longer climb into. Falls are by far the most common cause of injury among people over 65.
Municipalities can fund some adaptations and home help through the Social Support Act (Wmo), but procedures vary from place to place, and an older person who does not know the system may never apply. Staying at home can also mean staying alone. Many people over 75 have lost a partner, no longer drive and see family rarely, and loneliness is linked to poorer health and earlier moves into care. Regular contact, a reason to go out and help reaching shops and appointments keep people connected to their neighborhood and able to manage on their own.

Founded 1953 · Headquarters: Amersfoort
Dutch foundation working against loneliness and supporting older people to keep living independently.
How they work: Nationaal Ouderenfonds focuses on keeping older people connected and active while they live at home. It runs the Zilverlijn, a telephone service through which volunteers call older people for a regular chat, and supports the PlusBus, minibuses driven by volunteers that take older people on outings and errands. Much of its work is carried out by volunteers and local partner organizations, and it campaigns nationally on loneliness and on what older people need to keep living independently.
Track record: In 2023 its 19 projects reached 65,000 older people, focusing on over-75s living independently; its 96 PlusBus vehicles provided 26,000 trips.

Giving in the Netherlands
Water, nature and housing security run through the Dutch causes. With a large share of the country below sea level, restored coastal wetlands serve as flood defense as well as habitat, and unused city land becomes pollinator corridors for declining bee populations. Social causes include adult literacy and Dutch-language classes for newcomers, companionship and practical support that help seniors keep living at home, and rent-arrears mediation by Leger des Heils that heads off evictions. Partners also include Natuurmonumenten and Nationaal Ouderenfonds.
5 causes are listed in the Netherlands, each with its own verified organization. $356,435 has been distributed to causes in the Netherlands since 2021.
