Why this matters in France

Children growing up in the quartiers prioritaires, the urban districts that French policy classes as most disadvantaged, often have the least support once the school bell rings. Primary schools finish mid-afternoon and many have no classes on Wednesday afternoons, so the hours between school and a parent's return are long. Municipal leisure centers charge fees and fill quickly, and private tutoring or paid activities are out of reach for families on low wages. Parents who clean offices, work in care or stack supermarket shelves often work early, late or split shifts.

The cost shows up in school results. International PISA testing has repeatedly found that a pupil's social background predicts performance more strongly in France than in most OECD countries, and the gap opens early. A child without a quiet place to do homework, someone to read with, or a trip beyond the neighborhood falls behind in ways a classroom teacher alone cannot repair. Free, regular after-school time with a trusted older person fills part of that gap.

What your gift pays for

  • Recruitment, training and supervision of student mentors paired with individual children
  • Books, games and learning materials used in weekly mentoring sessions
  • Outings to libraries, museums and cultural venues outside the child's neighborhood
  • Coordinators who link schools, families and volunteers and follow each pairing through the year

Organization

AFEV (Association de la Fondation Etudiante pour la Ville) · France

SIREN, Répertoire Sirene / Annuaire des Entreprises (France) · No. 390322055

Founded 1991 · Headquarters: Paris

Runs student mentoring and educational support for children in lower-income neighbourhoods.

How they work: AFEV's core model is one-to-one mentoring by university students. Each volunteer commits to roughly two hours a week across a school year with a single child, often meeting at the family's home, and schools help identify the children who would benefit. The emphasis is on confidence, curiosity and openness to the city rather than formal tutoring. AFEV also runs shared student flats, known as KAPS, where young people live in working-class neighborhoods and run local solidarity projects alongside their studies.

Track record: By 2012 AFEV had 7,000 student volunteers each year mentoring 7,000 children and young people in 330 working-class neighbourhoods across 124 French cities.

Giving in France

Pressures on cities and household budgets tie the French causes together. Samusocial de Paris provides shelter beds and hot meals for a homeless population estimated at 350,000, more than double the 2012 figure. Young refugees and asylum seekers receive French-language bridging classes as they enter school, children in lower-income neighborhoods get free one-to-one mentoring from university students, and low-income pensioners receive heating help in winter. Partners are French associations, among them Apprentis d'Auteuil, AFEV and Petits Freres des Pauvres.
