Funds vocational and income-generating training for Afghan women barred from most forms of public employment and higher education, delivered through local women's organizations.
Why this matters in Afghanistan
Since 2021, Taliban decrees have shut Afghan women and girls out of secondary school and university, barred most of them from work in government and with NGOs, and restricted travel without a male guardian. At the end of 2024 medical training institutes were also closed to women. Households that lost a male earner to conflict, migration or illness often have no lawful route to an income, and women-headed families are among the poorest in the country.
Skills that can be practiced at home or in women-only spaces, such as tailoring, embroidery, food processing and animal husbandry, remain one of the few ways left for women to earn. Learning them now usually happens quietly, in small groups, without public announcement. Training brings a source of income and, often just as much, a reason to leave the house and spend time with other women during years of deep isolation.

Organization
Women for Women International - Afghanistan · Afghanistan
IRS (EIN) (parent: Women for Women International, US) · No. 52-1838756
Founded 2002 · Headquarters: Kabul
International NGO still running skills and economic programmes for Afghan women under Taliban restrictions.
How they work: Women for Women International's general model combines a year-long program of monthly stipends, vocational and business training, and sessions on health and rights, delivered to women in small groups. In June 2026 the organization announced it was closing its Afghanistan country office and ending direct programs there, shifting instead to funding and technical support for Afghan national and local organizations. Grants for this cause would therefore reach women through those partners rather than through its own staff.
Track record: It reached 146,427 Afghan women and girls with training incl. tailoring, knitting and animal husbandry (3,125 graduates in 2025); it announced closure of its Afghanistan office in June 2026.

Giving in Afghanistan
Restrictions on women and girls shape most of what is listed for Afghanistan. Two causes support community-run learning for girls barred from secondary school and vocational training through local women's organizations for women shut out of most public employment. The others fund trained birth attendants in provinces where maternal mortality remains high and well rehabilitation in villages affected by drought. Partners include the Afghan Institute of Learning, the Afghan Midwives Association and DACAAR, organizations with long experience working inside the country.
4 causes are listed in Afghanistan, each with its own verified organization. $328,840 has been distributed to causes in Afghanistan since 2021.
