Why this matters in Pakistan

Afghan families have lived in Pakistan for more than four decades, and many of today's school-age children were born there. Some are registered refugees, others hold different documents or none. Since late 2023 the government has pressed Afghans to leave, extending the drive to registered refugees in 2025, and many households do not know how long they can stay. That uncertainty pushes school down the list of priorities, and children move between districts or drop out when parents lose work.

Public schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where most Afghans live, are already crowded and short of teachers, and admission can depend on paperwork families do not have. The government has also de-notified the refugee villages where many families lived and studied, and humanitarian funding for education has been shrinking. A child who has missed several years cannot simply join a class of the right age, so bridging programs, together with the cost of books, bags and uniforms, often decide whether learning resumes at all.

What your gift pays for

  • School bags, notebooks, textbooks and stationery for children enrolling or re-enrolling mid-year
  • Accelerated learning classes that compress several grades so older children can catch up
  • Stipends and training for teachers in community-based classrooms within host neighborhoods
  • Uniforms and help with enrolment documents, two common obstacles to a government school place

Organization

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Pakistan · Pakistan

Brønnøysund Register Centre, Norway (parent: Stiftelsen Flyktninghjelpen / NRC) · No. 977538319

Founded 2002 · Headquarters: Peshawar

Norwegian Refugee Council programme providing education for Afghan refugee children in Pakistan, including accelerated learning in Quetta.

How they work: The Norwegian Refugee Council links education with its other services rather than running classrooms in isolation. Its accelerated learning approach condenses the primary curriculum so that children who missed years can reach a level that lets them enter or return to formal school. NRC also provides information, counselling and legal assistance on civil documentation, which can matter as much as a classroom place when paperwork decides access to services. It works with provincial education authorities so learners can move into public schools.

Track record: Since 2012 NRC has run an Accelerated Education Programme in Quetta, in which almost 1,000 Afghan refugee children had enrolled by 2017.

Giving in Pakistan

Two quite different pressures shape the Pakistan listings. Afghan refugees have lived in Pakistan for decades, and the Norwegian Refugee Council funds school places and learning materials for Afghan children in host communities. Recurring monsoon floods have repeatedly destroyed homes, and Alkhidmat Foundation, a Pakistani organization, rebuilds them as flood-resilient shelter. One cause looks to neighbors who crossed the border, the other to the country's own exposure to extreme weather.

2 causes are listed in Pakistan, each with its own verified organization. $197,535 has been distributed to causes in Pakistan since 2021.
