Funds free or low-cost local classes in literacy, numeracy and digital skills for adults who left school early, a first step toward accredited study and employment.
Why this matters in Australia
Leaving school at fifteen or sixteen was once a common route into factory, farm and trade work in Victoria. Many of those jobs have gone or now require a Certificate III or higher, and TAFE courses and employers ask for literacy, numeracy and digital skills that early school leavers never had the chance to build. People caught in this gap include workers retrenched from manufacturing, parents returning to the workforce, recently arrived migrants and young adults who disengaged from school.
Returning to study as an adult is daunting. A formal classroom can bring back bad memories, timetables clash with shifts and caring duties, and fees, transport and childcare add up, especially in outer suburbs and regional towns. Free or low-cost local classes in a familiar community setting, taught at an adult pace, are often the step that makes enrolling in accredited training realistic. Without that step, many people stay in insecure, low-paid work for years.

- Course materials and loan laptops for learners without a computer at home

Australian Business Register ABN · No. 30174498896
Founded 1979 · Headquarters: Docklands, Victoria
Network of neighbourhood houses delivering second-chance adult learning in Victoria.
How they work: Neighbourhood Houses Victoria is the peak body for the state's neighbourhood houses, which are independent, community-managed centers run by local committees with many volunteers. Houses registered as Learn Local providers deliver pre-accredited courses funded through Victoria's Adult, Community and Further Education Board. Classes are small and informal, sit alongside playgroups, food programs and social groups in the same building, and are designed as a first step back into learning before accredited study.
Track record: Neighbourhood houses make up two-thirds of Victoria's Learn Local providers, delivering pre-accredited training that leads learners to further education and work.

Giving in Australia
Distance from services links three of the four Australian causes. Young people in regional and rural areas face long public mental health waits, which headspace helps bridge with free or low-cost support, and elderly residents in remote areas without a local care facility receive mobile aged care through Silverchain. Adults who left school early can take free or low-cost classes in literacy, numeracy and digital skills. The fourth cause, with AIATSIS, preserves and digitizes Aboriginal oral history and cultural artifacts at risk of being lost.
4 causes are listed in Australia, each with its own verified organization. $285,985 has been distributed to causes in Australia since 2021.
