Funds basic literacy classes for adults who missed formal schooling due to conflict-related disruption.
Why this matters in Chad
Decades of armed conflict, from the civil wars of the 1970s and 1980s to rebel offensives in the 2000s and Boko Haram violence around Lake Chad since the mid-2010s, shut schools and scattered families across generations. Many of today's adults grew up in villages with no school, or saw classes stop for years at a time. In the east, very large numbers of refugees fleeing Sudan's war since 2023 have added people whose schooling was cut short.
Adults who cannot read face practical obstacles every day: checking a receipt at market, following medicine instructions, registering a birth, or keeping records for a farming group or small trade. Women are most affected, since girls were more often kept home. Formal schools are not built for adults who spend their days in fields and markets, and the ministry counts 136 national languages, so classes in a learner's own language, held at times that fit the farming calendar, are what make literacy achievable.

Organization
Ministry of National Education and Civic Promotion (Chad) · Chad
Government body
Ministry delivers non-formal basic literacy classes for people aged 15 and over.
How they work: Classes run in community literacy centers led by local facilitators, known as animateurs; nearly 4,000 of them supervised learners in the 2023-2024 campaign. The ministry organizes literacy as annual campaigns supported by technical and financial partners, and has announced plans to document and transcribe 50 national languages for teaching. Its targets put women first, including kits to help newly literate women put their skills to use.
Track record: In its 2023-2024 campaign the Ministry registered 133,747 adult literacy learners, 92,463 of them women, across 2,758 literacy and adult education centres.
