A cryptocurrency giving program from Global Relief Group

DonateCrypto is not a separate organization — it's the cryptocurrency donation program of Global Relief Group, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has been doing this work since 1999. We built this platform so donors holding crypto can give it to the causes they choose without a card network and without converting it first. Gifts go to Global Relief Group's verified wallets, and within 24 hours of confirming each one we convert it and send it to the partner organization behind the cause you chose.

Where this started

Global Relief Group was founded in 1999 by Dr. Chris Hultberg. For more than twenty years it funded relief work the traditional way: bank transfers, checks and fundraising campaigns.

By 2021, donors kept asking the same question — could they give cryptocurrency directly, instead of selling it first and donating the cash? In March 2021, Global Relief Group's board approved a proposal to begin accepting and actively fundraising in cryptocurrency.

The first crypto campaign that spring funded emergency water access for a community the organization already worked with. Donors sent crypto directly, and the team checked every transaction against the blockchain by hand. Within a year, that manual process had grown into the vetting and confirmation system this platform still uses: every cause is reviewed before it's listed, and every donation is confirmed on-chain before a receipt is sent. DonateCrypto is that program.

Leadership

Global Relief Group was founded by Dr. Chris Hultberg in 1999. He continues to lead the organization today, including its cryptocurrency giving program, DonateCrypto.

What you can do here

DonateCrypto lets anyone who holds cryptocurrency give it to a specific cause, rather than to a general fund. You can choose from 280 causes: 279 in 79 countries, plus one global cause supporting exiled journalists. Together they cover 19 categories, from Health & Medical Aid and Education to Water & Sanitation, Refugee & Displacement Support and Press Freedom & Journalism.

We accept nine cryptocurrencies, each on one network only:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) on the Bitcoin network
  • Ethereum (ETH) on Ethereum
  • USD Coin (USDC) on Ethereum, as an ERC-20 token
  • Tether (USDT) on TRON, as a TRC-20 token
  • BNB on BNB Smart Chain
  • Solana (SOL), XRP on the XRP Ledger, TRON (TRX) and Dogecoin (DOGE), each on its own network

You don't need an account to give. A free account is optional — it keeps your donation history and receipts in one place and can send you a monthly reminder if you want to give regularly. A reminder never moves funds on its own; you always confirm and send each gift yourself.

How your donation reaches a cause

  1. You choose a cause. Browse by category or country on the homepage, or start from the guide for your country.
  2. You choose a coin and an amount. The donation screen shows the one network we accept for that coin. Sending on a different network can mean the funds never arrive, so check it matches before you send.
  3. You send to Global Relief Group's verified wallet for that coin. It's the same address for every cause in that currency — causes never supply their own addresses.
  4. You submit your donation record. The cause, the amount and your transaction ID (TXID) are what tie your gift to the cause you chose.
  5. We verify it on the blockchain. Once our team has confirmed the transaction on-chain, we email your official receipt, which carries our EIN.
  6. We send it to the cause's partner organization within 24 hours. Once your donation is confirmed, we convert it and send it by bank transfer to the named partner's registered bank account. Only blockchain network fees apply, and the partner never needs a crypto wallet.

Who receives the money

Every cause on this site is carried out by a named partner organization — 269 organizations in total, because a few of them run more than one listed cause. They range from local charities and community groups to national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, country offices of international charities, UN agencies and public programs.

Each cause page names its partner and shows what we've confirmed about it: the country it works in, its official registration number and the registry that issued it where one exists, the year it was founded, where it's based, its track record, and the date our team last verified those details.

An example from the site

The Harm Reduction Services Fund in Canada is carried out by PHS Community Services Society, a Vancouver nonprofit founded in 1993 that co-operates Insite, Canada's first supervised consumption site. Its page shows its Canada Revenue Agency charitable registration number, 891413791RR0001, so you can check it against the official register yourself.

Where the money has gone

Since 2021, $27,942,382 has been donated through DonateCrypto by 108,330 donors, funding more than 2,000 grants to partner organizations in 79 countries, plus one global cause.

Health & Medical Aid has received the most, followed by Education, Hunger & Poverty Relief, Disaster & Crisis Relief and Children & Youth.

Our Impact & Annual Report shows the total for every year, category, country and cause, and updates as donations are confirmed.

Our legal structure

DonateCrypto operates as a program of Global Relief Group, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States (EIN 27-3281810). Donations made through this platform are received into Global Relief Group's verified wallets — one per cryptocurrency — then converted and sent to the partner organizations of the listed causes within 24 hours of confirmation, consistent with our nonprofit status.

Our headquarters: 428 J St, 4th Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814, United States.

Giving in your own language

For each of the 79 countries where we list causes, there's a giving guide written in that country's main language. Each guide lists every cause we support in that country, the partner organization behind it and what that partner has achieved, so you can read about local causes in the language you'd search in. You'll find all of them on Donate by Country.

The rest of the site, including the donation flow, is in English.

How we write and check what you read

Charities don't write their own listings here. Our team writes every cause description, and we check it before it's published:

  • Statistics are checked against official sources — UN agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, UNESCO and UNHCR, the World Bank, the OECD, and national statistics offices or government departments — and updated to the latest figure we can find.
  • If we can't confirm a figure from a reliable source, we remove it rather than keep it.
  • Where a description quotes a statistic, the cause page names its source just below it.
  • Every page shows when it was last updated, and every partner shows the date our team last verified it.

If you spot something that's out of date or wrong, email support@donatecrypto.co and we'll check it against the sources and correct it.

What we believe about giving

We think a donor deciding to give shouldn't have to trust a platform blindly to know where the money went. Every cause listed here is one we've checked ourselves before it's published, not one that paid to be listed or submitted its own copy uncontested. Every donation goes to Global Relief Group's verified wallet for the coin you choose, and once it's confirmed, the transaction is visible on a public block explorer — not just in an internal dashboard you have to take our word for. Our team verifies each transaction on the blockchain before emailing your official receipt.

That's also why the platform takes no fee. The only deduction is the blockchain network fee. If you add the optional 5% Amplify Fund, that amount is pooled with other donors' contributions and shared across every cause at the end of each month, so causes with fewer direct donors still receive support.
